In October and November 2024, IDRF carried out impactful outreach initiatives across Guyana in collaboration with key partners. These activities addressed pressing mental health challenges, provided critical health services, and fostered community resilience.
Here’s a closer look at our work across various regions:
Region 2 (Essequibo Coast)
To combat escalating mental health concerns, our team provided counseling sessions to 20 individuals, including students, parents, and community members. A major focus was on suicide prevention among youth. Additionally, discussions with local health workers underscored the urgent need for expanded professional mental health support and substance abuse interventions in the region.
Bartica (Region 7)
In collaboration with Project New Nation, the Ministry of Health (MOH), the US Embassy Civil Affairs Team, and others, IDRF facilitated health services for over 250 participants. Cancer screenings, mental health counseling, and access to critical resources were key features. Forty individuals received personalized counseling, many of whom were survivors of domestic violence and substance abuse. These efforts highlighted the importance of sustained outreach in Bartica.
Skeldon (Region 6)
Working alongside Rotary, we organized workshops on stress management, coping strategies, and mental health awareness for 50 participants, including students and teachers. The event also offered one-on-one counseling, health screenings, vaccinations, and blood donation opportunities, ensuring comprehensive support for attendees.
Linden (Region 10)
In partnership with the Wismar Mosque, MOH, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and other stakeholders, IDRF addressed the critical mental health needs of Linden’s migrant population. Counseling services and community resources reached over 100 individuals, strengthening the support systems available to migrants in the region.
Police Awareness Training in Berbice (Region 6)
To empower local law enforcement, IDRF conducted an awareness-raising session and training for 27 police officers in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force and MOH. The training covered mental health issues, substance abuse, and suicide prevention, equipping officers with the knowledge to respond compassionately and effectively within their communities.
Berbice (Region 6)
In collaboration with the Region 6 Health Authority, IOM, NAPS, and CIOG, an 80-member team of specialized doctors, nurses, and lab technicians provided health services to approximately 300 patients. The initiative included general check-ups, gynecological screenings, PSA tests, eye examinations, HIV/STI testing, blood drives, and vaccinations. Patients also received eye-testing vouchers and glasses. In addition to healthcare services, clothing and footwear were distributed, and data collection on the migrant population was conducted. Mental health awareness remained a top priority, especially given the high rates of suicide ideation and attempts in the Upper Corentyne areas.
