In honor of World Suicide Prevention Day, and in partnership with the Ministry of Health, IDRF Guyana co-hosted a comprehensive workshop focused on suicide awareness and mental health support, drawing participation from 90 representatives across Region Six. The event was attended by officials from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education and underscored the urgent need for collaboration to address Guyana’s high suicide rates.

The workshop provided attendees with practical tools to recognize the signs of suicide and support individuals at risk. Dr. Timothy Morgan, Director of Mental Health at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of a coordinated response and expressed the Ministry’s dedication to working alongside IDRF to combat suicide through expanded mental health resources. Dr. Vishalya Sharma, Regional Health Officer, extended her gratitude to IDRF for its continued efforts in this area, while Akash Persaud from the Ministry of Education highlighted initiatives aimed at supporting at-risk students.

Sessions covered a range of topics, from identifying causes of suicide to understanding the cultural factors that contribute to mental health issues. Led, by Dr. Mark Constantine, participants were trained on using screening tools like the PHQ-9 for depression and the CSSRS for suicidal ideation, equipping them with resources to support individuals within their communities.

As the workshop concluded, IDRF’s team reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a proactive approach to mental health awareness. The event marked a significant step forward in Guyana’s ongoing efforts to reduce suicide rates and build a supportive network for mental health advocacy across communities.
